Southbank: The perfect way to spend the day during the Christmas period

artdivision10 December 2015

It’s that time of the year again; Christmas is upon us once more. In the run up to the special day, we’ll be bombarded with party invites and family gatherings. As usual, London plays a big role in the festivities with special events going on all over the city. From Christmas markets to special performances and plays, nowhere is safe from the chiming of bells or Christmas lights as each venue tries to outdo the other.   London’s magnificent Southbank holds many events in the lead up to Christmas that will keep you in the festive spirit even when the good old English weather lets you down. So to keep you occupied over the coming month, we have compiled a few of our favourites…

The Southbank centre hosts a large number of events throughout the month with a Christmas theme. Beginning with the Winter Market, it will see thousands descend on the building in the hopes of getting all manner of Christmas goodies. From festive arts and crafts, to seasonal food and drink, you’ll find it difficult to walk by without coming home with at least a couple of trinkets. The market is open daily up until the 24th December.

If classical music is more your style, on the 14th, the Royal Festival Hall will be screening a live performance of Casablanca, complete will orchestral accompaniment. Watch Humphry Bogart and Ingrid Bergman toil with their love on the big screen as Bogie struggles with throwing it all away for love or doing the right thing. This classic 1942 drama is not to be missed! Alongside this performance, the Southbank Centre is putting on a number of plays including the fabled It’s a Wonderful Life, which is running to the end of the month.

But Christmas isn’t just about markets, carol singing and Jesus right? No! It’s about parties and throughout December there are normally a good number to choose from. One, more unconventional way of getting down on the dance floor, is on one of London’s many riverboats. Different charters cater for different needs. If you’re looking for a more upmarket experience, complete with some of the finest cuisine, then look no further than Thames Luxury Charters. The company has an outstanding fleet of boats, well trained hospitality staff and of course award winning menus. Dine and dance whilst you sail by some of London’s best known landmarks including the London Eye and Waterloo Bridge, all stunningly lit up against the night sky.

London EyeIf you fancy yourself as a bit of skater then take a stroll down to the London Eye, home to its very own ice rink. Each session last for 45 minutes and you can soak up all those landmarks and take in the city. It’s also the perfect way to warm up on what is usually guaranteed to be a cold December day. To add to the experience you can book a flight on the London Eye complete with seasonal cocktail.

Whether you’re keeping it simple with family and friends or have a party arranged for almost every night this month, Southbank has something to offer everyone, so don’t miss out.
